Certified Translation, Notarization and Apostille in Türkiye

Certified translation, notarization and apostille are related but different procedures. The correct combination depends on the document, destination country and instructions of the authority receiving it.

Plan the right steps in the right order

A request for an “official translation” can refer to several different steps. A certified translation addresses the translated text and translator declaration. Notarization authenticates a signature or formal act under the applicable local process. An apostille certifies the origin of a public document for use between parties to the Hague Apostille Convention.

These terms are not interchangeable. Before ordering a service, ask the receiving authority exactly which document, language, certification wording and legalization route it accepts.

What is a certified translation in Türkiye?

In Türkiye, the phrase commonly refers to a translation signed and stamped by a sworn translator. The translator's authority is linked to the relevant notary arrangement, while the precise format required abroad may differ. Some foreign institutions use “certified translation” more broadly and ask for a declaration of accuracy rather than Turkish notarization.

  • Confirm the target country and exact receiving institution.
  • Check whether the institution requires a sworn translator, a signed certification statement or a notarial act.
  • Keep names, dates, identity numbers and document references consistent across the whole file.
  • Use the passport spelling of personal names when the application process requires it.

What does notarization add?

Notarization is a separate formal step. In a typical Turkish workflow, the notary verifies the relevant signature and completes the notarial certification. It does not independently reassess the specialist meaning of every translated sentence.

Not every translated document needs notarization. It should be included only when the receiving authority, application checklist or applicable procedure requires it. Ordering it automatically can add cost and time without improving acceptance.

What is an apostille?

Under the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille replaces the traditional legalization process for public documents used between Convention parties. It authenticates the origin of the public document—such as the signature, capacity and seal—not the truth of its underlying content.

An apostille is not a translation and does not automatically make a translation acceptable everywhere. The destination country must participate in the Convention for the relevant relationship, and the receiving authority may still set language or translation requirements.

Who issues apostilles in Türkiye?

Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance identifies governorships and district governorships as competent authorities for many administrative documents, while judicial documents follow the competent judicial channel. Procedures can depend on document type and locality, so verify the current route before attending.

The order of translation, notarization and apostille

There is no universal order for every case. The correct sequence depends on which signature or document the apostille must authenticate and on the receiving authority's checklist. In some cases the original public document is apostilled before translation; in others a notarized translation is the document presented for apostille.

A safe planning sequence

  • Obtain the latest written requirements from the receiving authority.
  • Identify whether the apostille is required on the original, the notarized translation or both.
  • Confirm the accepted target language and whether the apostille page itself must be translated.
  • Only then schedule translation, notary and competent-authority visits in the correct order.

Documents commonly submitted for official translation

  • Birth, marriage, divorce and civil-registry records.
  • Diplomas, transcripts, certificates and professional qualifications.
  • Powers of attorney, court decisions and corporate documents.
  • Police records, residence documents and immigration files.

This list does not determine the formalities. Two institutions may request different treatment for the same document, especially when one accepts electronic verification and the other requires a physical original.

Document checks before translation begins

  • Make sure every page, reverse side, seal and attachment is visible in the source scan.
  • Resolve unclear names and numbers before they propagate through several documents.
  • Tell the translator whether the final file will be digital, printed, notarized or apostilled.
  • Avoid altering the source document or recreating official seals in the translation.

Planning certified translation in Ankara

For an accurate quotation, share readable copies, the target language, destination country, receiving institution and deadline. If notarization or apostille may be required, identify that before production so page layout, signatures and collection logistics can be planned together.

Frequently asked questions

Does every certified translation need a notary?

No. It depends on the receiving authority. A signed translator certification may be enough for one process, while another expressly requires Turkish notarization.

Does an apostille certify the translated content?

No. An apostille authenticates the origin of the public document. It does not validate the substantive content or replace translation.

Can an electronic document be translated?

Yes, but acceptance of the electronic source and any verification code is determined by the receiving authority. Supply the complete verifiable version whenever possible.
